Sleep Alternatives to CPAP

Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township and surrounding areas of Michigan

Teeth WhiteningAlthough obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can seriously affect the sleep patterns, and therefore overall health of sufferers, the most common treatment may not appeal to all. OSA is characterized by stoppages in breathing as you sleep, which can happen dozens of times a night. This is because the airway is blocked by the soft tissue of the tongue or back of the throat, as well as the adenoids.

The most common treatment for those suffering from OSA is something called the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) system. This treatment has successfully treated many people by supplying a constant stream of air through the mouth and nose, but many others may have trouble with using, or continuing to use, it.

The CPAP system requires that its users wear a mask over the mouth and nose as they sleep. As a result, many users have said they can only tolerate using it for a few hours a night. There have been complaints of runny nose, dry mouth, sore throats, and eye irritation. Some people break out in acne due to the straps. The mask is attached to a hose, which is hooked up to a machine, so CPAP patients who are more comfortable on their stomachs may also have problems. And the noise from the machine may keep many people awake.

Alternatives

Although CPAP is the most common treatment for OSA, it is not the only one. Other options available at Rochester Advanced Dentistry include:

  • SomnoMed MAS (Mandibular Advancement Splint) – This device is worn at night and helps keep the airway open. Sufferers of mild to moderate OSA may find this works very well for them. SomnoMed MAS looks a lot like a mouth guard and works by keeping the lower jaw set in a forward position. By doing so, it cannot fall back against your airway and cutting off your breathing.
  • Tongue Stabilizing Device (TSD) – This device is made of silicone and is made to fit over your tongue. Similar to SomnoMed MAS, it is made to keep your tongue in a forward position. When your tongue is in its proper position, it will not fall to the back of your mouth and block off your airway. It will also help to keep you from snoring.
  • ApneaLink Sleep Screening – This is more of a way to monitor the severity of your OSA than it is a treatment. However, it can help to figure out which treatment is the best option for you. The ApneaLink is a device that records your breathing and keeps track of your snoring and breathing stoppages. This information is analyzed by a healthcare professional, who will then advise you on the best course of treatment.
