Why You Need to Come to a Consultation with an Open Mind

It’s important to do your homework before scheduling a consultation with a cosmetic dentist. The more you know about the potential treatments out there–including their benefits and limitations–the better.

But there’s a point at which your research can become harmful. That’s the point at which you think your research has made you believe that you know exactly the right procedure to correct your cosmetic or oral health issue. No matter how convincing the evidence you’ve found, it’s important to come to your consultation with an open mind and be ready to hear your dentist’s recommendations about your smile makeover. Here’s why you need to maintain your open mind at a consultation.

There May Be Options You Haven’t Heard of

The Internet has such an amazingly dazzling quantity of information that it’s easy to believe it contains information on everything. But there are gaps, and some of them are in cosmetic dentistry.

Dental technology and techniques are constantly improving. Although we try to keep our website up to date, it’s a hard job. And other dentists, practitioners, and manufacturers face the same challenge.

Schedule a consultation with an open mind!

And even if the information about the latest procedures is actually online, it may not be easy to find. It can take time for new information to sift to the top of the search engines, especially when there’s an out-of-date but otherwise comprehensive review of your options.

In either case, there may be new approaches and procedures that you just don’t know about and will have to consider during your consultation.

A Not-So-Perfect Fit

Researching online, it’s easy to make something fit your situation. It’s kind of similar to the way a horoscope can seem to be so accurate to your life when the words and phrases are generic and vague.

The description online might sound spot-on, but we can’t know for sure until we’ve performed an exam. Then we’ll truly understand what’s the condition of your mouth and which treatments are likely to give you the best results.

Benefits May Be Exaggerated

I know it may be hard to believe, but some people have a tendency to exaggerate online. You have to remember that even informational content online is actually written as an advertisement to some extent. And when it comes to dental products or procedures, some of them may be represented as better than they are–just like other products you may buy.

Online content may misrepresent many aspects of a treatment, including:

  • Characteristics of a good candidate
  • Complications or side effects
  • Appearance
  • Failure rate
  • Strength, flexibility, or durability

We have worked with these products, and/or know other dentists who have. We have seen how they really perform in a real-world situation. We know which claims are bogus and which ones are genuine. We can tell you which are the good products capable of giving you a durable, beautiful smile.

But if you come into a consultation with your mind made up, you may not hear what we have to say. And then you’ll have to learn the hard way that not everything that glitters is gold.

The Decision Is Yours, but Get the Information First

You are in control of your cosmetic dentistry procedures. You are the only one who can say “go” or “no-go” on a procedure. But don’t commit mentally one way or the other until you’ve talked to a dentist about your options. That way, you’ll have the full information you need to make an informed decision.

And if you’re not sure and you want a second opinion–talk to another dentist rather than just Googling again.
