Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that have been surgically placed into the jaw bone. Porcelain crowns can then be placed over the implant allowing the patient all of the comfort and functionality of their own teeth. Bone grafting will precede implants if it is deemed necessary to ensure facial structure. A graft will be fitted into the defect where it will be held in place with screws until the patient’s cells form a new bone. This procedure will need to be performed a few months in advance of the actual implants.

In order to place the implant, a precision dental drill is used to create a pilot hole in the jaw bone where the implant will be placed. The hole is expanded by using progressively larger drill bits until it is sufficiently deep and wide to accommodate the implant.

The implant is then precisely screwed into place to ensure no damage is done to the surrounding bone. A healing period is necessary after an implant is in place to ensure the bone is strong enough to support the functions of biting and chewing.

Once the implant is healed, a titanium screw will be placed into the implant to secure the patient’s new crowns. Crowns are designed to fit perfectly into the patient’s mouth in appearance and shape, ensuring maximum comfort and beauty.
