Are you unhappy with the appearance of your smile? If so, you might be considering cosmetic dentistry. But how do you know that you’ll get the kind of results you desire?

The good news is that most of the time, cosmetic dentistry is very successful. In our office, virtually all of our patients have been happy with the results they’ve seen. (Check our reviews and you’ll see just how happy our patients have been!)

The bad news is that it does take some work to make sure you get the results you’re looking for. Here are three key things you have to do to make sure that you are happy with your cosmetic dentistry.

3 Keys to Cosmetic Dentistry

Find the Best Cosmetic Dentist

Your cosmetic dentist is the architect of your smile makeover. And they’re the craftsman, too. So, needless to say, it’s critically important to make sure you’ve found the dentist who is best able to provide you with great results. Because all dentists can technically say they are cosmetic dentists, it’s up to you to sort through your candidates to make sure you’re find the dentist that is best qualified for your smile makeover.

Start by narrowing your candidates down. You should look at a dentist’s:

  • Biography to learn what is their level of training and experience
  • Before and after gallery to learn the quality of work they offer
  • Reviews to see how previous patients have felt about their work

Once you’ve narrowed your list to 5-7 dentists, start calling practices to schedule consultations.  You will want to talk to at least three dentists to get a gauge of how they differ. Don’t neglect personality–pick a dentist you feel comfortable telling exactly how you feel. If you don’t trust them enough to be honest, you may not get the results you’re looking for simply because they won’t know what you want!

Invest in Quality

Good cosmetic dentistry is worth paying for. You will have a more attractive smile that gives you confidence. You will enjoy your results for years to come. To ensure this, you have to be prepared to pay the fee for a dentist whose talent, training, and experience can help them deliver the results you want. But you also need to be prepared to pay for quality materials.

Cheap cosmetic dentistry is not worth paying for. It’s less likely to last, and it may not even look good to begin with. Why go through the trouble of getting cosmetic dentistry that is just going to make you self-conscious about your smile in a different way?

The good news is that cosmetic dentistry may not be as expensive as you think. First, new techniques and technologies have streamlined the process to make it faster and easier, which means cheaper, too. Plus, financing can help the smile of your dreams fit in the budget of your reality.

Proper Maintenance

If you’ve chosen the best dentist and invested in quality materials, you have a good chance that your cosmetic dentistry will last for decades. But there’s one more thing you have to take care of it make it happen: maintenance.

The good news is that daily maintenance for your cosmetic dentistry isn’t hard. In fact, it’s mostly what you should be doing for your teeth, anyway.

Brushing and flossing daily is even more important after cosmetic dentistry. Although restorations aren’t vulnerable to decay, the restoration will be lost if decay develops under it.

It’s also important to make your checkup and cleaning appointments every six months. If your regular dentist isn’t the one who performed the cosmetic dentistry, make sure they know what you had done and know how to care for your restorations.

Always make sure you wear a mouthguard when playing sports, even if it’s just a casual game. Injuries are just as likely to occur in noncompetitive sports. And just because a sport is supposed to be “non-contact” it doesn’t mean that your teeth can’t hurt.

If you have bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching), you’ll probably be given a mouthguard to wear every night. Make sure you do wear it.
